What Is Stimming, and How Is It Different From Fidgeting?

Stimming is short for self-stimulating behaviour: repetitive movement, sound or sensation that a person does to regulate how they feel. Rocking, hand-flapping, humming, tapping, spinning an object, pressing on a texture and repeating a phrase are all stims. Fidgeting is the everyday, lower-intensity version that almost everyone does: pen-clicking, leg-bouncing, hair-twirling. The two sit on the same spectrum. The difference is mostly one of intensity, purpose and how much the person needs it. Stimming is strongly associated with autism and ADHD, it is not a symptom to be eliminated, and for many people it is the thing that makes a loud, bright, unpredictable world bearable.

What does stimming actually do?

It gives the nervous system a steady, predictable input to hold onto. Some people stim to add sensation when the world feels flat or under-stimulating, which is common in ADHD. Others stim to drown out sensation when the world is too much: the rhythm of rocking or the pressure of a squeeze is something reliable to focus on while a supermarket's lights and noise wash over. Many people do both, depending on the day. Stimming can also express emotion, especially joy or distress, in a way that words do not. The common thread is regulation: the person is adjusting their own state, using their own body, in real time.

How is stimming different from fidgeting?

In degree and in need. Fidgeting is usually unconscious, small and easy to stop when asked. Stimming is often more noticeable, more rhythmic, and much harder to suppress, because it is doing a real job. Someone who fidgets can generally sit still through a meeting with some effort. Someone who stims may need to stim in order to get through the meeting at all, and being made to stop can leave them anxious, exhausted or unable to concentrate. The behaviours overlap completely. A person twisting a ring under a table could be doing either. What differs is what happens if you take the ring away.

Is stimming a sign of autism?

It is common in autism and in ADHD, and it is also common in everyone. Almost every person stims sometimes: pacing during a phone call, bouncing a knee in a waiting room, humming while cooking. What tends to differ in autistic people is the intensity, the frequency and how essential it is, and the fact that the stims are often more visible, such as hand-flapping or rocking. On its own, stimming does not diagnose anything, and it is not something a website can assess. Should stimming be stopped?

No, not unless it is causing harm. For decades the approach was to train visible stims out of autistic children, on the grounds that they looked odd, and the people who went through that describe it as being denied a basic coping tool. The current understanding, led by autistic adults themselves, is that stimming is healthy self-regulation and that the goal, where any goal is needed, is to make sure a stim is safe and available, not to remove it. A stim that hurts, like head-banging or skin-picking, is worth redirecting to something that meets the same need without damage. A stim that is merely visible is nobody's business.

They are predictable, behaving the same way every time. They are controllable: how hard, how long and when to stop are up to the person. If a child is stimming, it usually means they are managing something well, not that something is wrong. The kindest and most accurate frame is that stimming is a person keeping themselves steady, in public, with the tools they have.
