Key facts at a glance
- A desk toy is called a kinetic sculpture, an executive toy, a fidget tool or a curiosity object depending on what it does.
- Kinetic sculptures move on their own; fidget tools are for the hands; curiosity objects are for the eye and mind.
- Occupational therapists tend to say fidget tool or sensory tool rather than fidget toy.
- Most good desk toys belong to two categories at once, which is why the names blur.
Here is the taxonomy, and how to use it to choose one.
What are the main types of desk toy?

Executive toys. The old name, from an era when a desk toy signalled that you had a desk worth decorating. Often metal, often heavy, often kinetic. The term is a little dated but it still turns up in searches, and the objects are still good.
Fidget tools. Objects for the hands: rollers, rings, spinners, dense squishies, putty. Quiet motion or resistance you can use without looking. The best fidget toys for adults guide covers these in detail.
Curiosity objects. Objects for the eye and the mind: prisms, colour filters, Platonic solids, puzzles, precision instruments. They do not move on their own; you move them, and they show you something true when you do.
Puzzles. A category of their own: mechanical, geometric or colour puzzles that live on a desk because they take weeks. Different from a fidget because the point is to finish, eventually.

Why is a colour-mixing cube such a common desk object?
Because it is the rare thing that belongs to three of the categories at once. The Original CMY Cube is a solid acrylic cube with cyan, magenta and yellow faces. As a curiosity object it demonstrates subtractive colour mixing: turn it and the faces overlap into green, red and blue, exactly as printer inks do. As a fidget tool it is weighted, cool and silent. As a desk sculpture it changes with the light through the day, so it is never quite the same object at four o'clock that it was at nine.
The same physics comes in other geometries. The Aether is an octahedron and the Motus an icosahedron, two of the five Platonic solids, both translucent CMY. On a desk they read as small pieces of geometry; in a window they behave like stained glass with a mind of its own.

Are desk toys the same as fidget toys?
The short version
Desk toys are kinetic sculptures if they move, executive toys if they are heavy and retro, fidget tools if they are for the hands, and curiosity objects if they are for the mind. Choose quiet, choose something that looks like an object, and choose something that changes with the light so you do not tire of it. A colour-mixing cube happens to be all four at once, which is why so many of them end up on desks.

What are CMY Cubes?
CMY Cubes are translucent objects made in the three subtractive primaries, cyan, magenta and yellow. Turn one in the light and the faces overlap into new colours, the same way a printer builds every colour from three inks.
Are CMY Cubes for children or adults?
Both. They are solid acrylic, safe to handle and simple enough for a child to enjoy, but most of our customers are adults who keep one on a desk or windowsill and pick it up between tasks.
Which CMY object should I start with?
The Original CMY Cube. It carries all three primaries on one object and shows the whole idea in a single turn. The Aether and Motus add geometry, the CMY Pack gives you the primaries as separate cubes, and the PolySquish is the soft, squeezable version.
